I'm not quite sure how I got that particular tone, but what I do is make different (usually two) layers of colour on top of the photograph. I start with a khaki-ish tone, kind of like chocolate milk only lighter. And set the mode to Pin Light.
Then I make another layer which is usually blueish or greenish (you should absolutely experiment, the combinations are truly endless) and set it to Lighten or Darken.

Overall, I say just try mixing colours with modes (pin light, darken, lighten, overlay, etc).
(Oh and I use photoshop :) )
